Magazine Analysis: Case Study || NME, Issue: 11.10.2014


1) Front page analysis:

There are 3 main colours used, and a colourful underlining where Ian Curtis is written highlighting the main image, a picture of him.



The colourful shade is added to draw the readers attention on to the word on the top of the line in this case it is Ian Curtis.



As you can see the three main colours that are used are red, black and white. The colour red is used because its a colour that energising. It excites the emotions and motivates people to take an action. White represents purity, innocence, wholeness and completion. The colour white also refers to the word "clean". Main while the colour black represents secretive and unknown. The main image is black and white because its a colour combination that is strong, which gives it an old effect and it refers to plain, which is not eye tiring. These colours attract audiences because they are three colours that combine together and it can create a strong atmosphere. They are also colours that are not eye tiring, referring to plain and not disturbing.
 

However throughout the magazine different range of colours are used, including bright yellow, which is often catches peoples attention and known as a cheerful colour which can also create enthusiasm for life and can awaken greater confidence and optimism. Hints of light pink and green are used along with some dark colours for example navy blue. Pink reflects on a sign of hope. It is a positive colour inspiring warm along with comforting feelings. Besides green is an emotionally positive colour, giving us the ability to love and nurture ourselves and others unconditionally. We cans also tell that there were other colours apart from black, red and white were going to be used from the colourful line that is underlined to highlight Ian Curtis. These bright colours are used to highlight text and on sub-headings, to make it stand out




2) The image is taking up the whole of the magazine. The main person is place on the top, middle just after the magazine master head. Its a picture of Ian Curtis. The image sort of looks scary for people who wouldn't know who he is, also the black and white colours give it a different effect. The title is placed on the top left of the page, using two colours, which includes a red box with white typing. The name is short an memorable, simply "NME" which can be read as "enemy". The reader will be attracted to this name because its simple and short. The subtitle gives us hints about what is included the magazine overall. They are placed all over the magazine. There is about 4 different subtitle written using the colours black and white. The subheading tells us what the magazine is featuring inside and pulls readers attention by the language it uses. For example it uses emotive language to persuade the target audience to read the article and to find out more about the topic, in this case emotive language is used to describe Ian Curtis, "His lyrics tell much more than a conversation with him ever could" and this grabs the readers attention because they want to find out why? this magazine is saying this, which persuades them to buy the magazine and read it. The price reflects on how much people are willing to pay. In this case this magazine costs £2.50 showing that people are willing to pay this much for this magazine. The price is placed where the bar-code is along with the issue date. The price is also written in different currency suggesting they sell it other countries like USA, Spain and China.




Target audience for this magazine can be both male and female teenagers because it includes both male and female artists. However not every teenagers would read it because they not every teenager is interested this kind of music type. Adults with also be another targeted audience but however main focus are teenagers due to it being focused on today music, where teenagers know a lot about. Also a new comer artist would be used as the main image on the front cover, which again attracts teenagers.


The phrase "A personal journey into the mind of a troubled genius" attracts the audience attention because its inspirational. Specially the word "troubled genius" puts in a question mark on peoples mind about the idea of being a "troubled genius". This language is used because it sets a different one and makes the magazine sound exciting.






3) In the content page, in big letters it says what it includes using the the term "inside". Headings are highlighted in black to make them stand out along with there page numbers just before the heading also highlighted. It also says what is the main area in the heading below it, in smaller letters and different colours.



 There is only one image used in the content page, under the heading "posters" to show which artist poster is found. Although it lists three other people the editor or page designer decided that this image would be the most suitable to publish. The image is in colours, with a lemon yellow background, which is taken in a close up. The colour of the content page links with the front cover by using the same colours red, white and black with hints of grey. The layout is simple. It is simply broken in to three columns with the sub headings of: "regular" meaning that its found in every issue of the magazine; "features", meaning that its special for this issue and "band list", meaning that the bands that are in this issue of this magazine. The font of the writing is the same: plain, readable, simple written in black, on a plain white background, but also written in white with black highlights making it readable on a white background. Lastly the language that is used is friendly and the tone of the writing seems exciting because of all the headings that are included the page designer seems like he or she knows what its target audiences wants to read.



 4) The topic of this double page spread is the "essential new tracks" which is informing the readers about the new tracks. It is also arranged in the order from 1 to 20, where 1 being the track of the week, like a hit list, It is positioned with the artist name on top followed by the tracks name just below, along with information about the artist and the soundtrack or album below the sub-heading which, is informing the readers about the artist and their albums. The also included speech-marks suggesting quotation, meaning that they have been interviewed and said these words of phrases.  


The target readers might find this page interesting because it is targeted for people who wants to know the top hits of the week and which artist made it to the top 20 with what song and they could find it interesting if they really follow every week about what number that particular artist was and where he or she is now. The extra information might also get there attention due to it giving the readers extra information about the album of the artist or an event that is going to happen soon or even the new tracks: "...The Voyeurs' new tract". This also keeps the readers informed about the album and artist.

5) In this magazine the editor decides to answer questions that the readers has asked. Dan Stubbs, who is the person that is answering the questions approaches to the readers like he is having a conversation with a friend or a mate. He is saying how music is starting to get out of cities and moving into smaller places' like Nottingham and Bristol: "Nothingham is definitely punching above its weight right now.", here he is approaching to the readers friendly and speaking out what he is thinking about this situation giving his own opinions. Also at the very top of the page on the right just after the heading, it tells you who is answering the the questions this week: "Answering you this week: Dan Stubbs", which is suggesting that someone else answers the question that comes from the reader each week and this week is someone called Dan Stubbs who is answering. This is informing people about who is telling them the answers to the questions they have asked making them feel more scure. He is also building a close relationship with the readers by addressing them using their names: "Have a little perspective, please, Sam!", which is informal language and he is again approaching the person, Sam Chapman, who has asked the question like he knows him and that they are mates.

- Having the same colour scheme but in different tones for the issue (black, white and red). For example having a darker red.

- Producing the magazine for both gender to read.

Representation:
- I would want my product to represent teenagers and young adults. From the clothes they are wearing the music they are producing. Aslo by the colours.

Colours in a Magazine - Psychologies || September 2014

- There are three main colours in this magazine which are pink, white and black. The colour pink is used to represent female, because pink is a colour that females are more likely to be interested in. Pink is also a colour that shows love and some people believe that pink is sign of hope. Also pink calms and reassures our emotional energies, some people may argue that pink represents the sweetness and innocence of the child in us. On the other hand the colour white is used because the colour white means purity, innocence, wholeness and completion. The colour white also refers to the word "clean". Lastly the colour black relates to hidden, secretive and unknown. This is why most of the text is written in the colour black, to show that more of the text is hidden in side the magazine. The colour black is also used so it can stand out more on a white background and on a main image.

Emotive and Colloquial Language in Magazines. Psychologies || September 2014

- In the magazine "Psychologies" the target audience are female adults.
- "Improve your love life in 15 minutes" The write uses emotive language here about love and life combined. Emotive language is used to persuade the target audience to read the article and to find out more about the topic. By including the word "love"  brings up all the happy or sad emotions the reader has experienced in past. She uses colloquial language to approach friendly towards her readers, "And this is what we explore..." points out to the readers that she is trying to approach them as a mate by suggesting that she went and explored about the suitation on purpose, for them. The editior wants to sound friendly to its readers in order for them to carry on reading the article and show that its worth the money they gave it, which is not offensive.
- Many Magazines target their audiences through the use of language. They aim to attract their audience by using colloqial and emotive langauge. For instance in this magazine words like "love" "beauty" and  "perfect products" these words accomplice with female audience due to females more likely to be into these sort of discussions where as men doesnt really care about beauty and perfect product, its something that doesnt interest them, its more of a feminine idea. By using this language it attracts more female readers who wants to find out more about these products.
